Matter is the emerging industry standard for IoT interoperability. The fact that it can now be implemented in Rust on a $4 microcontroller (Raspberry Pi Pico 2 W) means that future smart home devices could run secure, memory-safe code without a Linux stack. This reduces the barrier for cryptographically authenticated IoT devices — a prerequisite for tokenized, decentralized sensor networks or machine-to-machine micropayments. While still niche, it aligns with the growing 'Blockchain for IoT' thesis, especially for Rust-native blockchains like Solana, Polkadot, and Near.
