1Password has linked up with Claude, the AI assistant from Anthropic, to let users access stored credentials through the chatbot. The company bills the move as a new benchmark for AI identity security.
What the integration does
The tie-up means 1Password customers can ask Claude to retrieve passwords, credit card numbers, or other secrets from their vaults. The AI handles the request without exposing the credentials to the model or storing them in chat history. 1Password says the system uses its own encryption and access controls to keep the data safe.
Claude itself never sees the plaintext password. Instead, the assistant fetches the credential and delivers it directly to the user, then discards the conversation. The process is designed to prevent the AI from learning or retaining any sensitive information.
Password managers have long been a target for attackers, and adding AI access raises the stakes. 1Password argues that the integration actually reduces risk by limiting human error — people typing passwords into chat windows or copying them to unsecured notes. The company claims this is the first time a major password manager has given an AI assistant this level of direct access while maintaining zero-knowledge encryption.
Organizations that use 1Password for business can now let employees use Claude for fast credential retrieval without breaking compliance rules. The admin dashboard logs every request, so IT teams can audit who asked for what and when.
A new standard for AI identity security
1Password calls the integration a new standard because it solves a core problem: how to let AI do useful work with sensitive data without giving the AI permanent access. The company points to rising adoption of AI agents in the workplace and says the old model of granting blanket permissions doesn't work anymore.
The integration is available now for 1Password customers who also have a Claude Pro or Team subscription. Users need to enable the feature in their 1Password settings and authenticate via their existing biometric or master password before Claude can make any requests.
No word yet on whether other password managers will follow with similar AI integrations. For now, 1Password has a clear first-mover advantage in a space that barely existed six months ago.
