Agentic AI — systems that act autonomously on behalf of users — has crossed the half-million user mark. But the technology's backers are already staring at a wall: the computing power needed to serve a projected 100 million users doesn't exist yet. And they're looking to orbit for a fix.
The compute bottleneck
Today, agentic AI runs on roughly 500,000 active users. That's a niche, but the growth curve is steep. Industry projections put the user base at 100 million in the near future — a 200-fold increase. Current compute resources, however, are already strained. Data centers can't scale fast enough to handle the real-time processing and low-latency demands these agents require.
The problem isn't just raw processing power. Agentic AI needs continuous, reliable compute — often in bursts — and terrestrial data centers face physical limits on energy, cooling, and space. The gap between what's available and what's needed is widening.
Orbital compute as a potential fix
One proposed solution is orbital compute — data centers placed in space. The idea isn't new, but it's gaining traction as a way to bypass earthly constraints. Satellites or space-based platforms could tap into solar energy 24/7, avoid land-use restrictions, and offer low-latency connections for certain applications.
Proponents argue that orbital compute could provide the elastic, on-demand capacity agentic AI will need. The concept is still in early stages, with technical and cost hurdles. But the conversation has moved from theoretical to serious consideration among infrastructure planners.
No company or regulator has been named in connection with orbital compute for agentic AI. The discussions remain at the level of feasibility studies and white papers. Still, the fact that it's being discussed at all signals how acute the compute shortage is expected to become.
The 100-million-user target doesn't have a fixed date. But the compute gap is already forcing hard choices. Some developers are throttling features to keep latency down. Others are betting on efficiency gains in algorithms. Orbital compute is the most dramatic option on the table.
The question now is whether the infrastructure can be built before the user base outruns it. No timeline has been set for orbital compute deployment, and no budget has been announced. For now, the 500,000 users are the lucky ones — they're still getting the full experience.
