Amazon is preparing to challenge Elon Musk's Starlink head-on with a dedicated satellite constellation built for mobile broadband. The move signals a new front in the battle for space-based internet, one that could reshape how people connect on the move — from RVs and boats to airplanes and remote work sites.
Project Kuiper's Mobile Pivot
Amazon's satellite arm, Project Kuiper, has long planned to offer fixed broadband to underserved communities. But the company now appears to be sharpening its focus on mobile connectivity, a segment Starlink has aggressively pursued. Amazon has not publicly detailed the mobile-specific constellation, but the strategy is clear: compete directly with Starlink's rapidly growing network of low-Earth-orbit satellites that already serve thousands of mobile users.
The shift comes as Starlink expands its "Roam" service, which allows customers to use the internet while traveling. Amazon's move suggests it sees mobile broadband as a key revenue driver, not just a niche add-on.
What Amazon Brings to the Table
Amazon's satellite network, known as Project Kuiper, received FCC approval in 2020 to deploy over 3,200 satellites. The company has since secured launch contracts and plans to begin beta testing in the coming months. For mobile broadband, Amazon could leverage its existing cloud infrastructure — AWS — to offer integrated services that Starlink cannot easily match. That includes seamless connectivity with Amazon's logistics and data services.
But the real challenge is technical. Mobile broadband from space requires low latency and high throughput, especially for streaming and real-time applications. Starlink has a head start, with thousands of satellites already in orbit and a growing user base. Amazon will need to launch quickly and reliably to catch up.
Starlink's Dominance Under Pressure
Starlink currently dominates the satellite mobile broadband market. Its network supports users on land, at sea, and in the air. The service has been particularly popular in rural and remote areas where terrestrial options are limited. Amazon's entry could drive down prices and accelerate innovation, but it also risks fragmenting the market.
Regulatory hurdles remain. Both companies must navigate spectrum allocation and orbital slot coordination. Amazon's constellation will need to avoid interfering with existing satellites, including Starlink's. The FCC has already approved Kuiper's plan, but coordination with other operators is ongoing.
Amazon is expected to launch its first production satellites later this year. The company has not announced a specific date for mobile broadband service availability. Starlink, meanwhile, continues to expand its mobile offerings. The real test will come when Amazon's constellation goes live and customers can compare the two services side by side.
