AMD Invests Up to $5B in Anthropic, Pledges 2 GW of AI Chips in Nvidia Challenge

AMD has struck a wide-ranging partnership with AI startup Anthropic that includes an equity investment of up to $5 billion and a commitment to supply as much as 2 gigawatts of its MI450 GPUs. The deal, announced Tuesday, marks AMD's most aggressive move yet to break Nvidia's stranglehold on the market for artificial intelligence hardware.

The scope of the deal

Under the agreement, AMD will sell Anthropic up to 2 GW of its MI450 graphics processing units. The chips are designed specifically for AI training and inference workloads. On top of the hardware sale, AMD will invest up to $5 billion in Anthropic equity. The companies did not disclose the exact split between the GPU purchase and the equity stake, nor did they provide a timeline for when the chips will be delivered or the investment will be paid out.

Anthropic, best known for its Claude family of large language models, has been a major customer of Nvidia's GPUs. The startup's shift toward AMD hardware signals that the chipmaker's AI offerings are gaining traction among leading AI developers.

Nvidia currently dominates the AI chip market, with its H100 and upcoming Blackwell GPUs powering most large-scale AI deployments. AMD has been trying to carve out a share with its MI-series accelerators, but adoption has been limited. This partnership gives AMD a high-profile customer and a potential showcase for its technology.

The deal also underscores the growing demand for AI compute capacity. Anthropic, like its rivals OpenAI and Google DeepMind, needs massive amounts of computing power to train and run its models. By locking in a multi-gigawatt supply of AMD chips, Anthropic secures an alternative to Nvidia's often constrained supply chain.

Neither AMD nor Anthropic has specified when the GPU deliveries will begin or how the $5 billion investment will be structured. The companies said the partnership is effective immediately, but concrete milestones remain unclear. Investors and industry watchers will be watching for AMD's next earnings call, where executives may offer more details on the deal's financial impact and production ramp.
