A leaner prompt
The original Claude Code prompt was 800 tokens long. Anthropic reduced it to 164 tokens, a reduction of 636 tokens. That's roughly 80% less text. The company said the shorter prompt performed just as well as the longer version across a range of tasks. The change was first noticed by developers who track prompt changes in AI tools.
No loss in performance
Despite the drastic cut, Anthropic reported no degradation in Claude Code's output quality. The tool continued to generate code, answer questions, and follow instructions at the same level. This challenges the assumption that longer, more detailed prompts are necessary for good results. It also suggests that many parts of the original prompt may have been redundant or unnecessary.
The reduction signals a broader shift in AI prompt engineering. Instead of packing prompts with every possible instruction, developers may start focusing on conciseness. A shorter prompt also means lower token usage, which can reduce costs and latency. Anthropic's move could push other AI companies to reexamine their own prompts. The change comes as the industry looks for ways to make AI models more efficient without sacrificing capability.
Anthropic has not said whether the shorter prompt will become the default for all Claude Code users. For now, the 164-token version is available in the latest update.
