Anthropic Launches Claude Cowork, an AI Agent for Knowledge Workers

Anthropic has released Claude Cowork, an AI agent built for knowledge workers. The agent can automate multi-step tasks, access files directly, and move between different software applications — all without the worker having to manage each step themselves. The product is available through Anthropic's platform and is part of the Claude family.

Automating complex sequences

Claude Cowork is designed for tasks that require more than one action. Instead of a person manually copying data from one place to another, running a script, or clicking through a series of forms, the agent can follow a set of instructions from beginning to end. For example, a worker might ask it to gather sales data from a remote database, calculate monthly averages, and format the results into a slide deck. The agent handles the entire sequence without supervision. This kind of multi-step automation is meant to save time on repetitive but structured work.

Working directly with files

The agent can read and write files in common office formats. That includes Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, and PDFs. A knowledge worker could ask Claude Cowork to find a budget report in a shared drive, update the numbers based on latest expenses, and then email the revised file to the finance team. The file access is built into the agent — it does not need to be routed through a separate file management tool. The agent can search for files by name or content as part of a larger workflow.

Bridging applications

Knowledge workers often switch between email, calendars, project management tools, chat apps, and databases. Claude Cowork can operate across these applications, pulling information from one and sending it to another. A user could say, 'Check the project board for tasks due this week, add them to my calendar, and send a reminder to the team.' The agent connects the tools so the worker doesn't have to. The cross-app workflow is a key differentiator from simpler chatbots that only answer questions within a single app.

Designed for knowledge workers

Anthropic is targeting Claude Cowork at knowledge workers — people whose daily work involves processing information, making decisions, and coordinating with colleagues. Marketing, finance, operations, and project management are common roles. These workers spend a significant portion of their day on digital administrative tasks: sorting emails, updating records, preparing reports, and moving data between systems. The agent takes over the execution of these tasks, allowing the worker to focus on analysis, strategy, and communication. It does not require technical skills to operate — instructions can be given in plain language.

Claude Cowork is accessible through Anthropic's platform. The company has not disclosed specific pricing or regional availability details beyond the launch. The agent is designed for knowledge workers who want to offload routine digital tasks to an AI that can handle the complexity of real-world office workflows.
