Anthropic Merges Claude Chat and Cowork Modes Into Single Interface

Anthropic is combining Claude's Chat and Cowork modes into one unified interface. The new setup gives users local file access and persistent memory. The rollout starts with Max plan subscribers.

What the unified interface brings

Until now, Claude had two separate modes. Chat handled conversations. Cowork was for collaborative tasks like editing documents or analyzing data. The merger means users no longer have to switch between them. They get a single workspace where they can talk to Claude, upload files from their device, and pick up where they left off thanks to persistent memory. That memory lets Claude recall past interactions and context across sessions.

Local file access is a key addition. Users can drag and drop documents, spreadsheets, or images directly into the interface. Claude can then read and work with that content without needing a cloud upload. The company says this makes the tool more useful for tasks that involve sensitive or large files.

Why the change now

Anthropic has been refining Claude's capabilities for months. The split between Chat and Cowork sometimes confused users about which mode to pick. By merging them, the company aims to simplify the experience. The persistent memory feature also addresses a common complaint: that AI assistants forget context between conversations. Now Claude can remember preferences, ongoing projects, and past instructions.

The move comes as competition in the AI assistant space heats up. Rivals like OpenAI and Google have been adding similar features. Anthropic's approach with Claude has always emphasized safety and alignment. The unified interface keeps those principles while making the tool more practical for daily work.

Who gets it first

The new interface is rolling out to Max plan users first. That's the top-tier subscription, which costs $100 per month and includes priority access to Claude's most advanced models. Max subscribers get the update immediately. Anthropic hasn't said when other plans — like the free tier or the $20 Pro plan — will see the change. The company typically tests new features with Max users before a wider release.

For now, Max users can log in and find the unified interface already active. The old Chat and Cowork buttons are gone, replaced by a single workspace. Local file access and persistent memory are turned on by default. Users can adjust memory settings in their account preferences if they want to clear or manage stored context.

Anthropic has not announced a timeline for broader availability. The company is likely monitoring feedback from Max users before deciding on the next steps. For those on other plans, the wait continues.
