Anthropic says it is investigating elevated error rates across Claude.ai, Claude Code, Claude Cowork and the Claude API, the company's status page shows. The disruption began Tuesday at 14:21 UTC and was still being worked through as users reported failed requests, conversations that wouldn't load or send, and repeated prompts to sign in again.
More than 10,000 users flagged problems shortly after 9 a.m. ET Tuesday, according to Downdetector. Anthropic's only guidance so far: retrying may succeed. The cause is still unknown.
What users actually hit
The symptoms were consistent across products. Requests failed outright. Conversations stalled when loading or sending. And a chunk of users got bounced back to a login screen mid-session — the kind of glitch that reads as a security event even when it isn't one.
📊 Market Data Snapshot
Claude Cowork is the detail worth circling. It's the enterprise collaboration product, and enterprise buyers don't shrug off downtime the way a hobbyist on a free tier will. A failed API call is an inconvenience. A Cowork session that drops during a client-facing workflow is a procurement conversation.
Timing is doing the damage
The outage landed during peak US trading hours and right at month-end. That's not incidental. Month-end is when funds rebalance and lock in gains, and AI has been one of the more crowded trades of the year. A high-profile reliability failure at one of the sector's flagship names gives anyone looking for a reason to trim exposure an easy one.
For crypto, the link is indirect but real. AI-themed tokens have been priced on the assumption that centralized AI infrastructure just works. Anthropic isn't in any of those tokens' cap tables. That won't stop a sentiment-driven sell-off if the outage drags.
The bot problem nobody's pricing
Here's the part that doesn't show up in a status page. A growing share of crypto trading, on-chain analytics and sentiment tooling runs through third-party AI models. When a major provider goes down, those strategies don't degrade gracefully. They go blind — simultaneously, and often without an obvious fallback.
If enough automated strategies lose their inputs at once, market depth thins out exactly when it's needed. That risk is correlated, and it's cumulative. Every outage at a leader like Anthropic adds to the case for verifiable uptime and decentralized compute, even if the market hasn't started pricing it.
Where this leaves the trade
BTC has been holding near $83,262 with dominance high and altcoins already soft, down about 4% on the week. The setup favors majors over speculative AI names if this headline lingers. A knee-jerk bid in decentralized AI compute tokens is possible — the "decentralization is the answer" reflex is well-trained by now — but it fades fast when volume stays this thin.
Anthropic hasn't given a resolution timeline. Until it does, the open question is whether this is a one-off or the next entry in a pattern. If Claude comes back clean within hours, the market forgets it by the weekend. If it stretches past 24 hours, the AI trade gets its first real reliability test of the quarter — and crypto's AI tokens, which have no operational link to Anthropic at all, will take the hit anyway.
