What the agreement covers

Under the deal, AT&T will gain access to D-Wave's quantum annealing systems and its Advantage quantum computer. AT&T's network handles massive amounts of data daily, and quantum computing could help find more efficient ways to manage that load.

D-Wave's approach uses quantum annealing, a method suited for optimization tasks rather than general-purpose quantum computing. That makes it a practical fit for telecom networks, where problems like scheduling maintenance or balancing bandwidth often involve many variables.

Why quantum for networks

Telecom networks are among the most complex systems ever built. They involve thousands of cell sites, fiber routes, and data centers that must work together seamlessly. Traditional computers struggle to find optimal solutions quickly when the number of variables grows. Quantum computers, even at current limited scales, can sometimes outperform classical machines on specific tasks.

AT&T has been researching quantum computing for years. The company previously tested quantum algorithms for network optimization and signal processing. This new agreement moves beyond research into a more formal partnership aimed at practical deployment.

Neither AT&T nor D-Wave disclosed financial terms or a specific timeline for when quantum-enhanced operations might go live. The companies said they will begin with pilot projects targeting specific network challenges.
