The situation underscores a growing mismatch between aging infrastructure and the power-hungry technology sector, forcing grid operators to scramble for flexible solutions.
Why the grid is under pressure
Heat waves typically spike air conditioning use, but this year the load is heavier than usual. Data centers that power artificial intelligence models require massive, constant electricity — often running at full capacity 24/7. When a heat wave blankets a region, the combined demand from homes, businesses, and server farms can push local grids dangerously close to blackouts.
Grid operators in several states have issued conservation alerts. Some have asked large industrial users to voluntarily cut back. The problem isn't just about having enough power plants — it's about getting electricity to where it's needed when it's needed.
