Cloudflare's chief financial officer told investors Thursday that non-human traffic could reach 1,000 times human levels within five years, a forecast that Elon Musk called accurate. Thomas Seifert said humans will become "a rounding error on the internet" as AI agents take over.
The 1,000x Projection
Seifert made the comments during Cloudflare's second-quarter earnings call. He said machine-generated traffic could hit 1,000 times human levels. The company had previously expected automated traffic to overtake humans in 2027, but that crossover happened in May 2026. Musk, in a separate statement, said AI agent traffic will vastly exceed human internet usage, endorsing Cloudflare's numbers.
Bots Are Already Everywhere
Data from security firms backs that up. HUMAN Security's 2026 State of AI Traffic report found automated traffic growing eight times faster than human activity. Monthly volumes of AI-driven traffic grew 187% from January to December 2025. More than 95% of that traffic is concentrated in retail and e-commerce, streaming and media, and travel and hospitality. Imperva's 2026 Bad Bot Report put automated traffic at 53% of all web traffic in 2025. Fastly counted bots at 49% of January 2026 requests, but flagged 99% of them as unwanted.
The Money Behind the Machines
ARK's projections suggest AI agents will account for nearly 25% of digital spending by 2030, up from about 2% in 2025. That could mean roughly $8 trillion in online commerce by the end of the decade. Seifert's forecast implies a web where human activity is a sliver of the total.
What the Shift Means
The numbers raise questions about how companies will handle a web dominated by bots. Fastly's finding that 99% of bot traffic is unwanted suggests a security challenge. The concentration of AI traffic in three verticals points to where the pressure will hit first. Cloudflare's own infrastructure will need to scale accordingly.
The crossover arrived a year earlier than expected, and Seifert's projection suggests the gap will only widen.
