Jim Cramer is calling it early: Nvidia and Broadcom are the two biggest winners from OpenAI's ChatGPT-6 Astra launch. The model, which OpenAI started rolling out last week and calls its most intelligent yet, runs on a massive Nvidia training cluster and a custom Broadcom inference chip. Cramer's argument is that Astra's reception will protect OpenAI's standing and keep Broadcom's custom silicon order book full.
The Astra hardware stack
Astra didn't come cheap. Jensen Huang, Nvidia's CEO, said the model trained on roughly 100,000 Grace Blackwell systems, with another 400,000 chips coming online for OpenAI. That's a lot of compute, and it's all Nvidia. Huang's comments, made during the rollout, underline how dependent OpenAI is on Nvidia's hardware for training.
Broadcom's custom chip
Broadcom's role is different. The company built a custom chip with OpenAI called Jalapeño, unveiled in June 2026. It's designed for inference — the part where the model actually answers questions — and initial deployment is targeted for the end of this year. Celestica is assembling the systems. So while Nvidia powers the training, Broadcom is positioning itself for the inference side.
Cramer's thesis
Cramer, on his show, argued that a strong Astra reception protects OpenAI's standing and Broadcom's custom silicon order book. He also tied further upside to OpenAI and Anthropic listing publicly, with Broadcom as the preferred partner. That's a bet on more custom chips down the line, not just the ones already announced.
The market's reaction
The market didn't exactly follow Cramer's script on Tuesday. Nvidia fell almost 2% to $225.80, while Broadcom gained nearly 3% to $368.17. Analysts are still bullish on both. All 29 covering Nvidia rate it a buy, with an average 12-month target of $325.23 — that's 44% upside. Broadcom draws 26 buys and three holds, with an average target of $521.41, pointing to 42% upside. Nvidia's lowest analyst target of $275 still sits above Tuesday's price of $225.69, while Broadcom's $350 floor sits below its current price of $369.00. BeInCrypto counted 25 buys and three holds ahead of Broadcom's third-quarter earnings last week, so the tally has barely shifted.
What to watch
Cramer's charitable trust holds Nvidia and Broadcom alongside Intel and Micron, so he's got skin in the game. The coming weeks will show whether Astra demand reaches Broadcom's order book or stays inside Nvidia's training clusters. That's the question that will decide which of these two is the real winner.
