Ecolab, the global water management company, is committing $7 billion to a new initiative that uses artificial intelligence to cut water use in data centers. The investment targets one of the tech industry's most pressing environmental challenges: the enormous amounts of water needed to cool the servers that power cloud computing and AI workloads.
The $7 billion bet
The company announced the spending plan without detailing a timeline or specific projects. The money will go toward developing and deploying AI-based systems that monitor, predict, and optimize water consumption in real time across data center cooling loops. Ecolab, which already works with many of the world's largest data center operators, says the goal is to reduce the water intensity of computing without sacrificing performance or reliability.
Why data centers guzzle water
Data centers are among the fastest-growing industrial water users. Cooling systems, especially in hot climates, can consume millions of gallons per day. As AI models grow larger and more power-hungry, the heat they generate rises, forcing operators to run cooling equipment harder. Traditional approaches rely on evaporative cooling, which wastes water. AI can adjust cooling based on real-time temperature, humidity, and server load, cutting waste while keeping hardware safe.
How AI changes the equation
Ecolab's AI tools are designed to learn the unique thermal behavior of each data center. The software can predict when a cooling tower needs to run, for how long, and at what speed. It can also detect leaks or inefficiencies before they become costly problems. The company says the technology has already been tested in pilot programs, though it hasn't released specific water savings figures from those trials.
Ecolab's broader push
The $7 billion investment is part of a larger corporate strategy to position Ecolab as a technology partner, not just a chemical and services supplier. The company has been building out its digital platform, called Ecolab Water for Climate, which uses sensors and analytics to help industrial customers track and reduce water use. Data centers are a natural next step, given their rapid expansion and the regulatory pressure they face in water-stressed regions.
No timeline has been set for when the AI systems will be widely available. Ecolab is expected to provide more details in its next earnings call, scheduled for later this quarter.
