Foundation Robotics Puts AMD Ryzen AI in Phantom War Robots, Lands $24M DoD Contracts

Foundation Robotics is integrating AMD Ryzen AI processors into its Phantom humanoid war robots. The move comes as the company holds $24 million in U.S. Department of Defense contracts and pushes toward mass production.

The Phantom's New Brain

The Phantom is a humanoid robot designed for combat roles. By embedding AMD's Ryzen AI chips, Foundation Robotics aims to give the machines on-board machine-learning capabilities — faster decision-making without relying on remote servers. The processors handle real-time sensor data, object recognition, and autonomous navigation inside the robot's frame.

AMD's Ryzen AI line includes dedicated neural processing units. That lets the Phantom run inference tasks locally, a key requirement for military operations where network links can be jammed or slow. Company engineers say the integration took about 18 months of testing and validation with DoD compliance standards.

Military Contracts and Mass Production

The $24 million in DoD contracts covers development, testing, and initial deployment of Phantom units. Foundation Robotics has not disclosed exactly how many robots the contracts will deliver, but the figure suggests a batch of dozens of machines. The company has also begun retooling a factory in Texas to support volume assembly.

Mass production is the stated goal. Foundation Robotics plans to manufacture hundreds of Phantoms per year once the assembly line is running. The company is hiring production engineers and supply chain managers. It has not said when the line will hit full capacity.

Why AMD's Chips Fit

AMD's Ryzen AI processors are built on a 4-nanometer process and offer power efficiency critical for untethered robots. The Phantom operates on batteries and needs to balance compute load with runtime. The chips also support standard x86 software, so Foundation Robotics can reuse code from existing simulation and control systems.

Foundation Robotics did not name other processor vendors it considered. The choice of AMD puts the chipmaker deeper into defense hardware, a sector where Intel and Nvidia already have footholds. AMD has been expanding its embedded and adaptive computing portfolio, and the Phantom deal signals a push into robotics.

The Pentagon has not commented on the integration. DoD procurement records show the contracts were awarded under a rapid-fielding program that skips typical multi-year acquisition cycles. That means some Phantoms could see field tests sooner rather than later.

Foundation Robotics has not disclosed a price per unit or a delivery schedule for the first production robots.
