GE Vernova has introduced a medium-voltage uninterruptible power supply built specifically for the strain AI data centers put on the grid. The system, called the MV-UPS, is designed to shore up energy stability while opening the door for those facilities to take part in energy markets.
The grid problem AI data centers bring
AI data centers chew through power in a way older facilities never did. The demand is sharp and uneven, and utilities are feeling it. The new MV-UPS is GE Vernova's attempt to soften that blow—keeping the lights on inside the building without jolting the grid outside it.
By handling the power at a medium-voltage level, the system sits closer to where the grid meets the facility. That spot lets it smooth out the kind of swings that can trip up local grids. The company says the aim is to keep energy delivery steady, even when the data center's own demand spikes.
What the MV-UPS actually does
The unit acts as a buffer between the grid and the data center's heavy loads. When the grid stutters, the UPS takes over instantly, preventing the facility from shutting down or pulling erratic power. When the grid is fine, the system still manages the flow, keeping it consistent.
But GE Vernova didn't stop at the physical hardware. The company says the MV-UPS also creates market participation opportunities. In plain terms, that means a data center could use its backup power or flexible demand to help the grid and get paid for it—not just sit as a passive consumer.
A market seat for data centers
This isn't just about avoiding blackouts. It's about turning a data center's power setup into an asset that can respond to grid signals. The MV-UPS gives them a way to offer that flexibility without waiting for regulators to build something new. It's a way to be both a reliable tenant and a good neighbor on the grid.
The product is now being offered to data center operators. GE Vernova hasn't spelled out pricing or specific deployment dates, and it's not clear how quickly the technology will spread beyond early adopters. But the pitch is straightforward: the same gear that protects your servers can also help the grid breathe.
