The code focuses on transparency for general-purpose AI systems — the kind that power chatbots, image generators, and other tools built on large models. Companies that sign up commit to disclosing training data sources, energy consumption, and safety testing results. It's a voluntary step, but the EU has made clear it expects signatories to follow through.
Who else signed
Microsoft, OpenAI, and Amazon were already on the list. Google's addition rounds out the major U.S. tech players. Notably absent? Meta and Apple haven't signed yet. The EU hasn't said whether it will push them harder, but the clock is ticking toward August 2.
What happens next
By August 2, signatories must publish their first transparency reports. The European Commission will then assess compliance. If companies fall short, the EU could eventually move from voluntary codes to mandatory rules — though that's not on the table yet. For now, the pressure is on the holdouts.
