Google has expanded its Managed Agents in the Gemini API, adding background tasks and remote MCP support. The update, announced this week, is aimed at helping developers build reliable, production-ready AI agents that can operate on their own.

Background tasks let agents run long-running operations without keeping a session open. That means an agent can process a big batch of data, wait for an external event, or handle a multi-step workflow in the background. Remote MCP, short for Model Context Protocol, lets agents call external APIs and services directly. Together, the two features give agents a way to work autonomously and interact with the world beyond the model.
