HIVE Digital Unveils $3.5B AI Gigafactory Near Toronto

HIVE Digital Technologies has pulled back the curtain on BUZZHPC, an AI factory planned for Canada. The project calls for a 320-megawatt, CAD $3.5 billion AI gigafactory near Toronto. It will house more than 100,000 GPUs and is targeting a 2027 launch.

A 320-MW Campus for AI Workloads

The BUZZHPC facility is designed to handle massive parallel computing tasks. With 320 megawatts of power capacity, it will rank among the largest AI-dedicated data centers in the country. The company says the site will be built to support the next generation of GPU clusters, though specific hardware partners have not been named.

That power draw is significant. For context, a typical large data center runs at 50 to 100 MW. BUZZHPC triples that. The $3.5 billion price tag reflects the cost of land, construction, cooling systems, and the GPUs themselves.

Why the Location Matters

The gigafactory will sit near Toronto, a city that has become a hub for AI research and development. Proximity to talent, universities, and existing cloud infrastructure likely played a role in the site selection. HIVE Digital already operates crypto mining and HPC facilities in Canada, so the region is familiar ground.

Ontario offers relatively stable power grids and access to renewable energy, though the company hasn't detailed its energy sourcing for BUZZHPC. The province has been courting large-scale tech investments, and this project fits that pattern.

The 2027 Target

HIVE Digital aims to have the gigafactory operational by 2027. That gives the company roughly three years to secure permits, order equipment, and complete construction. It's an aggressive timeline for a facility of this size.

The company has not disclosed whether it has already secured power agreements or GPU supply contracts. Those details will matter as the project moves from announcement to shovels in the ground. For now, BUZZHPC remains a plan on paper — a very expensive one.

HIVE Digital will need to show progress on financing and construction milestones in the coming quarters. Investors and industry watchers will be watching for the next concrete step.
