Klarna Brings Flexible Payments to Google Search and Gemini App

Klarna has added its buy-now-pay-later and other flexible payment options directly into Google Search and the Gemini app. The move means shoppers can see Klarna's payment plans while browsing products or asking Gemini for purchase suggestions, without having to leave the search page.

How the integration works

When a user searches for a product on Google, eligible merchants will display Klarna's installment or pay-later options alongside pricing and availability. The same applies inside Gemini, Google's AI assistant, where users can ask for product recommendations and get responses that include Klarna's payment terms. The goal is to make affordability clear at the moment someone is deciding what to buy.

Pushing real-time affordability

Klarna's integration shifts the focus from just price to how a purchase fits into someone's cash flow. By showing installment options early in the shopping journey, Klarna hopes to convert browsers into buyers who might not have pulled out a credit card otherwise. For Google, it adds a layer of payment transparency that could keep users on its platforms longer.

Competitive pressure in digital commerce

The move intensifies the rivalry among payment fintechs trying to embed themselves into every part of the shopping experience. Klarna's competitors — including Afterpay, Affirm, and PayPal's Pay in 4 — are also racing to partner with search engines, social media platforms, and AI assistants. Embedding financing into search results gives Klarna a chance to reach customers before its rivals do.

Klarna has been pushing to become a full shopping destination, not just a payment button. This partnership with Google Search and Gemini is part of that strategy. Whether merchants will see higher conversion rates from the new placements remains an open question.
