Meta Purges Millions of Fake Followers From Celebrity Accounts in Anti-Scam Push

Meta removed millions of fake followers from celebrity Instagram accounts this week, including those of Cristiano Ronaldo, Taylor Swift, BLACKPINK, Kylie Jenner, Ariana Grande, and others. The sweep is part of a broader crackdown on coordinated inauthentic behavior — and it has a direct link to crypto scam farms that have long used fake influencer profiles to peddle token presales and airdrop hoaxes.

Why the cleanup happened now

The removal follows a May 5 policy update on Instagram and the rollout of a new AI moderation system trained to spot fake engagement patterns and predict user age. Meta says the system can detect impersonation, scam ads, and coordinated inauthentic behavior. It's not a one-off: last year the company removed 10.9 million accounts tied to scam centers and 159 million scam ads. Ninety-two percent of those ads were taken down before any user reported them.

The crypto connection

Crypto scam operations have been heavy users of Meta's platforms. They impersonate figures like Elon Musk and Vitalik Buterin to drive bogus giveaways and presales. The new detection model targets crypto promo bots specifically — scanning bios, behavior signals, and image context to flag impersonators of brands and public figures. The fake follower purge hits those operations by stripping the social proof they rely on.

Meta is also expanding monetization for legitimate creators. The company recently rolled out stablecoin payouts in USDC for creators in Colombia and the Philippines — a concrete step that offers an alternative to the scam-ridden environment. For now, the fake follower cleanup is ongoing, and Meta says the system will keep learning as new impersonation tactics emerge.
