A Growing Cloud Footprint
The latest region adds to Microsoft's existing three data center regions in India, which were launched over the past decade. The $20.5 billion commitment covers cloud and AI infrastructure across the country. Microsoft says the investment supports the government's push for digital sovereignty and local data storage.
Supporting AI and Compliance
The new region will host Azure services and AI tools, allowing Indian businesses and public sector organizations to run workloads within the country's borders. That's a key requirement under India's data protection framework. The move also aligns with the national policy on artificial intelligence, which encourages local development and deployment of AI systems.
What Comes Next
Microsoft hasn't disclosed a timeline for additional regions in India. The company continues to build out its global data center network, with more than 60 regions worldwide. For now, Indian customers can start using the new region for AI and cloud services immediately.
