NVIDIA has introduced a framework called COMPASS that uses AI agents to let robots navigate across different body types and environments. The company says the approach reduces both cost and complexity for developers building robot systems.
What COMPASS does
COMPASS, which stands for a set of techniques rather than a single product, is built around AI agents that can handle navigation tasks. These agents are designed to work across different robot platforms, meaning a navigation system developed for one robot can be adapted to another without starting from scratch.
For developers, that matters because robot navigation is typically one of the most expensive and time-consuming parts of building a robot. Each robot type—a wheeled delivery bot, a legged inspection drone, a robotic arm—often needs its own custom navigation code. COMPASS tries to change that by making the navigation layer reusable.
Lowering the barrier for developers
The key claim is about scalability. By using AI agents that can share knowledge between different robot designs, NVIDIA says developers can avoid the labor-intensive work of re-teaching navigation skills to every new machine.
