OpenAI Rolls Out Parental Controls, Age Filters for ChatGPT to Protect Teen Users

OpenAI has introduced a set of new safeguards for ChatGPT specifically designed for teenage users. The update brings parental controls, age-specific content filters, and dedicated learning tools, aiming to give families more oversight while keeping the AI assistant safe for younger audiences.

Parental controls now available

Parents can now monitor their teen's ChatGPT activity through a newly added control panel. The feature lets adults see conversation logs and set usage limits, without needing to share their own account credentials. It's a direct response to growing concerns about unsupervised AI interactions among minors.

Content filters by age group

ChatGPT will now apply different content filters depending on the user's age range. The system automatically adjusts what the chatbot can discuss, blocking topics that are considered inappropriate for younger teens. OpenAI says the filters are designed to be more restrictive for users under 13, with a slightly broader but still limited set of topics for those aged 13 to 17.

Learning tools tailored for teens

The update also includes a set of educational features aimed at teenagers. The tools help with homework, explain complex subjects step by step, and encourage critical thinking. OpenAI says they've worked with educators to make sure the responses are age-appropriate and focus on learning rather than just giving answers.

The new safeguards are rolling out to ChatGPT users globally over the next few weeks. OpenAI hasn't said whether it plans to extend similar controls to other age groups, but the company says it will continue to refine the system based on feedback from parents and teens themselves.
