Internet connections in Peru are surging as part of the country’s digital growth. But that growth is running into a stubborn bottleneck: integrating artificial intelligence into the existing infrastructure. And for crypto, the telecom sector remains a non-factor.
Why the surge matters
More Peruvians are coming online than ever before. The government has pushed connectivity programs, and private investment has followed. But the network wasn’t built for the kind of data-heavy, low-latency workloads that AI models demand. That’s a problem — especially as businesses and public services start to lean on AI tools.
The telecom sector in Peru has limited ties to cryptocurrency. That’s not a surprise. Most of the country’s digital growth has been driven by traditional internet access, not blockchain or crypto services. No major exchange has set up shop, and local telecoms aren’t offering crypto-related products.
What’s holding AI back
Peru faces challenges in integrating AI into its digital infrastructure. The surge in connections is mostly on mobile networks, which aren’t built for the kind of compute-heavy tasks AI requires. Latency is high, and bandwidth is uneven. Rural areas, where the biggest gains in connectivity have happened, are the worst off.
There’s also a skills gap. The country doesn’t have enough engineers trained to deploy and maintain AI systems. That’s a bottleneck that won’t be solved by laying more fiber alone.
Crypto’s quiet corner
Given the limited ties between telecoms and crypto, don’t expect a sudden wave of crypto adoption riding on Peru’s internet boom. The infrastructure just isn’t there — and the regulatory environment hasn’t pushed it either. A few small exchanges operate, but they’re not integrated with the major telecom players.
That could change if a big telecom decides to offer crypto services, but for now, the sector is watching from the sidelines.
What’s next
The government is expected to release a national AI strategy later this year. That plan will have to address the infrastructure gaps. Whether it also opens the door for crypto remains an open question — one the telecom sector isn’t rushing to answer.
