Wolfspeed has struck a partnership with LITEON to develop 800 VDC power solutions aimed at AI data centers. The deal, announced this week, targets a shift to more efficient power architectures that the companies say can cut energy waste and lower operating costs across the industry.
Why 800 VDC matters for AI workloads
AI data centers consume enormous amounts of electricity, and the voltage level at which power is distributed inside the facility directly affects efficiency. Traditional architectures often use lower voltages, leading to higher resistive losses. The 800 VDC standard allows power to travel farther with less loss, meaning less energy is wasted as heat and more reaches the processors. Wolfspeed, a specialist in silicon carbide semiconductors, brings high-voltage switching components that can handle the demands of 800 VDC systems. LITEON, a power supply manufacturer, will integrate those components into complete power modules for data center operators.
What the partnership covers
Under the agreement, Wolfspeed will supply its silicon carbide MOSFETs and diodes, while LITEON will design and produce the power conversion units. The companies are targeting both new data center builds and retrofits of existing facilities. They expect the first commercial products to reach customers within the next 12 to 18 months. Neither company disclosed financial terms or specific customer commitments.
Industry pressure to cut energy costs
Data center operators face rising electricity bills and growing scrutiny from regulators and investors over carbon footprints. AI training clusters, in particular, can draw tens of megawatts per facility. Moving to higher-voltage distribution is one of the few levers that can reduce losses without requiring a complete redesign of the computing hardware. The Wolfspeed-LITEON collaboration is one of several recent industry moves toward 800 VDC, but the companies claim their combined silicon carbide expertise gives them an edge in reliability and efficiency.
The next milestone will be the first customer deployment, which neither side has yet announced. For now, the partnership remains in the engineering and qualification phase.
