X has launched a new 'memory' tool that alerts users when posts they previously viewed receive Community Notes corrections. The feature surfaces notifications when people revisit content that's been updated with context. It addresses how corrections often go unnoticed after initial post engagement.
How the Alerts Appear
When a user opens a post that now has a Community Note, a banner appears at the top. It reads: 'This post has a Community Note now.' Tapping the banner reveals the correction without leaving the thread. The system only triggers for posts users have already seen before the note was added.
Community Notes Mechanics
Community Notes operates as X's user-contributed correction system where volunteers add fact-based context to posts. The memory feature doesn't alter how notes get created or approved. Instead, it layers on top of the existing workflow to highlight updated information for returning viewers. Notes currently cover disputed claims about events, health, and elections.
Changing User Flows
Previously, corrections only appeared on posts users hadn't seen. Now the alerts reshape engagement patterns. Someone who shared misinformation might later see a correction when checking their liked posts. X hasn't shared data on how many posts will trigger these alerts, but daily note additions number in the thousands. The company emphasized this isn't a content removal tool.
Platform Rollout
The feature is active across X's mobile and web apps immediately. Users don't need to change settings to receive notifications. The company hasn't outlined future adjustments but said it will track how often people engage with the alerts. No timeline exists for expanding the system to other types of post updates.
