XAI has brought its Grok models into Kilo Code, the agentic coding tool that works across VS Code, JetBrains, and the command line. The integration, announced without fanfare, lets developers tap Grok's reasoning capabilities directly inside their existing coding environments. The move is the latest in a string of partnerships aimed at embedding AI deeper into software development workflows.
What Kilo Code does
Kilo Code is designed for what the industry calls agentic coding — where an AI doesn't just autocomplete lines but takes on tasks like debugging, refactoring, and even writing entire functions. It already supported models from OpenAI and Anthropic. Adding Grok gives users another option, one that xAI has positioned as more direct and less filtered than some competitors.
Where it runs
The integration covers three main environments. Developers using Microsoft's Visual Studio Code can invoke Grok through Kilo Code's panel. JetBrains users — that includes IntelliJ, PyCharm, and WebStorm — get the same functionality. For those who prefer the terminal, the CLI version also works. That breadth means a developer switching between tools won't lose access to the model.
Agentic coding tools are becoming a battleground. Companies like GitHub with Copilot, Amazon with CodeWhisperer, and now xAI through Kilo Code are all vying for developer attention. Grok's strength has been in handling complex, multi-step reasoning. In a coding context, that could translate to better handling of large refactorings or tricky bugs that require understanding the whole codebase. xAI hasn't released benchmarks specific to this integration, so it's too early to say how it compares in practice.
No fanfare, but a clear signal
XAI didn't issue a press release or post a blog. The integration appeared in Kilo Code's documentation and was picked up by developers on social media. That low-key launch fits xAI's pattern — the company often ships features without the usual tech-industry buildup. For developers already using Kilo Code, the new model option is just a toggle away.
