Xiaomi has launched its Xring O3 chip, a mobile processor built on TSMC's 3nm process, marking the company's most serious push yet into in-house silicon. The move pairs Xiaomi with the world's largest contract chipmaker and puts the Xring O3 in direct competition with the flagship chips from Qualcomm and MediaTek.

Why the Xring O3 matters

The Xring O3 is not just another spec sheet entry. It's Xiaomi's answer to the expensive, high-end processors that have long been the domain of Qualcomm's Snapdragon line and MediaTek's Dimensity series. By bringing chip design in-house and manufacturing with TSMC, Xiaomi gains more control over its hardware roadmap. That could change how the company prices its phones and how fast it can iterate on features.

Qualcomm and MediaTek have dominated the Android smartphone processor market for years. Their chips power nearly every flagship and midrange Android phone, including Xiaomi's own. What the chip means for Xiaomi
