Why blockchain for AI governance
Autonomous AI systems make decisions without direct human oversight. That raises questions about who is responsible when something goes wrong. A blockchain could provide a clear record of what the system did, when, and why. By logging every action on an immutable ledger, it becomes possible to audit an AI's behavior after the fact.
Accountability and identity
One of the key benefits is accountability. If an autonomous vehicle is involved in an accident, the blockchain could show the exact sequence of decisions it made. That doesn't just help with blame—it also helps with improving the system. Identity management is another piece. Each AI agent could have a unique digital identity on the blockchain, making it easier to track which system did what, and to revoke access if needed.
Verifiable transactions
When autonomous systems handle payments or other transactions, verifiability becomes critical. A blockchain can ensure that every transaction is recorded and cannot be altered. That could be useful for everything from machine-to-machine payments to supply chain automation.
What's missing
The concept is still in its early stages. There are open questions about scalability, latency, and how to handle disputes. But the potential is clear: a governance layer that is transparent, decentralized, and tamper-proof could be exactly what autonomous AI needs to earn trust.
