Barclays Upgrades Marvell Technology, Sees AI Data Center Demand Driving 46% Revenue Growth

Barclays raised its rating on Marvell Technology to Overweight on Tuesday, setting a $150 price target. The upgrade hinges on expectations that the chipmaker will capture a surge in demand for optical technologies used in AI data centers.

The AI data center connection

Marvell's optical components are critical for moving data at high speeds inside massive AI clusters. As companies like Microsoft, Amazon, and Google pour billions into building out AI infrastructure, the need for faster, more efficient interconnects grows. Barclays sees Marvell as a key beneficiary of that buildout.

The bank's analysts pointed to Marvell's custom silicon and networking chips as areas where the company is gaining traction. They expect the company's revenue to jump 46% this year, driven largely by AI-related sales.

What the $150 target means

The new price target implies roughly 30% upside from Marvell's current trading level. It's a bullish bet that the company can sustain its recent momentum. Marvell's stock has already climbed more than 60% over the past year, but Barclays believes there's still room to run.

The upgrade comes as other Wall Street firms also take a positive view on semiconductor stocks tied to AI. Marvell's focus on optical interconnects and data infrastructure sets it apart from companies that rely more on consumer chip demand.

Revenue growth outlook

Barclays expects Marvell to post 46% revenue growth in its current fiscal year. That would mark a sharp acceleration from the 5% decline the company reported in fiscal 2024. The turnaround is largely attributed to AI data center spending, which is expected to offset weakness in other markets like enterprise networking and carrier infrastructure.

The company's optical products, including PAM4 and silicon photonics, are already being deployed in next-generation data centers. Marvell has also been winning designs with major cloud providers, which should provide a multiyear tailwind.

Still, risks remain. The broader semiconductor cycle could turn, and AI spending isn't guaranteed to keep growing at the same pace. Marvell's ability to execute on its product roadmap and manage supply chain constraints will be key.

The upgrade from Barclays adds to a growing chorus of analysts who see Marvell as a core AI play. The stock now trades at a premium valuation, but the firm argues the growth potential justifies it.
