Citigroup said on Aug. 18 that Bitcoin custody will join its Custody+ platform later this year. The move puts digital assets alongside traditional holdings in the bank's institutional system, a step that could make crypto more accessible to big clients.
Custody+ gets a crypto leg
The announcement came as part of a broader effort to fold digital assets into Citi's existing infrastructure. Custody+ is the bank's institutional platform for asset servicing. Adding Bitcoin means clients can hold crypto in the same place they hold stocks and bonds, without needing a separate provider.
One platform, two asset classes
The integration combines crypto and traditional asset services, so a single system handles both. That's a practical shift for institutions that have been juggling multiple vendors. Citi didn't provide a specific launch date, only that the service is expected later this year.
Built for continuous markets
The infrastructure is designed for markets that run around the clock and for faster settlement. That's a key difference from traditional custody, which often relies on business-hours processing. By plugging Bitcoin into that system, Citi is treating it like any other asset that needs to move quickly.
Clients will likely hear more details closer to launch. For now, the bank has made clear that crypto isn't an afterthought — it's going inside the main custody platform.
