Core Scientific, a company best known for Bitcoin mining, has signed a partnership with chipmaker AMD to build a 500-megawatt data center dedicated to artificial intelligence workloads. As part of the deal, Core Scientific received warrants to purchase 30 million shares of its own stock, a move that signals a strategic pivot toward AI infrastructure.
Why AMD and Core Scientific
The partnership pairs AMD's high-performance computing hardware with Core Scientific's expertise in operating large-scale data centers. Core Scientific has long managed energy-intensive Bitcoin mining facilities, but the company is now shifting focus to AI, a sector with growing demand for compute power. The 500 MW facility will be designed to handle AI training and inference tasks, a departure from the company's crypto roots.

Core Scientific issued warrants to AMD for 30 million shares of CORZ, the company's stock ticker. The warrants give AMD the right to buy shares at a predetermined price, though the exact strike price and vesting schedule were not disclosed. Such warrants are common in strategic partnerships, aligning incentives between the chipmaker and the data center operator. If AMD exercises the warrants, it will become a significant shareholder in Core Scientific.
