HSBC's digital asset platform, HSBC Orion, has received approval from the Bank of England to enter the central bank's Digital Securities Sandbox. The move allows the bank to test the issuance and settlement of digital securities within a regulated framework. The first transaction under the sandbox — a Digital Gilt Instrument — is expected in the first quarter of 2027.
Approval for the Digital Securities Sandbox
The Bank of England's Digital Securities Sandbox is designed to let financial firms experiment with distributed ledger technology for securities trading and settlement. HSBC Orion is among the first entrants to gain clearance. The approval means the bank can now begin preparing for live trials, although the exact timeline for testing beyond the initial gilt transaction has not been disclosed.
First digital gilt transaction on the horizon
The Digital Gilt Instrument will be a digital version of a UK government bond, or gilt. HSBC Orion plans to carry out the transaction in the first quarter of 2027. That date is still roughly two years away, suggesting the bank and the BoE are taking a cautious approach to rolling out the technology. The sandbox itself is expected to operate for a limited period, after which the BoE will assess whether to make the framework permanent.
