Mastercard Acquires BVNK, Enters $309B Stablecoin Market with XRP Support

Mastercard has completed its acquisition of BVNK, a payments infrastructure company that supports XRP and partners with Ripple. The deal marks the card network's entry into the $309 billion stablecoin market.

Why BVNK

BVNK builds technology for issuing and processing stablecoins. The company's platform supports XRP, the digital asset tied to Ripple's payment network. BVNK also has a partnership with Ripple, the firm behind the XRP Ledger. Mastercard didn't disclose the purchase price.

The acquisition gives Mastercard a ready-made stablecoin infrastructure. BVNK's clients include fintechs and banks that want to issue their own stablecoins or accept them for payments. Mastercard can now offer those services directly.

Mastercard's Digital Currency Push

Mastercard has been testing digital currencies for years. It launched a crypto card program in 2021 and later added support for select stablecoins on its network. But this is its first outright acquisition of a stablecoin-focused company.

The stablecoin market has grown to $309 billion, according to industry data. Tether's USDT and Circle's USDC dominate, but new entrants are emerging. Mastercard's move signals that traditional payments giants see stablecoins as a long-term part of the financial system.

The XRP Connection

BVNK's support for XRP is notable. Ripple has been fighting a U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission lawsuit over whether XRP is a security. A federal judge ruled last year that XRP is not a security when sold to the public on exchanges, giving Ripple a partial win. Since then, Ripple has expanded its partnerships.

BVNK's partnership with Ripple means Mastercard now has a direct link to Ripple's network. That could open the door for Mastercard to use XRP for cross-border settlements or to integrate Ripple's payment technology. Mastercard hasn't said how it will use the XRP support.

What Comes Next

The acquisition has closed, so Mastercard can start integrating BVNK's technology immediately. The company hasn't announced any specific stablecoin products yet. Industry watchers will be looking for Mastercard's first post-acquisition announcement — likely a pilot with a bank or fintech client.

One open question is how regulators will view Mastercard's stablecoin entry. The U.S. Congress is debating stablecoin legislation, and the European Union's MiCA rules take effect this year. Mastercard will need to navigate those rules as it rolls out new services.
