Anthropic's MCP Gains Ground as Alchemy, Coinbase Integrate Standard

Anthropic's Model Context Protocol (MCP) is quietly cementing itself as the universal standard for AI interoperability, with Alchemy and Coinbase both integrating the protocol this year. The two crypto infrastructure giants are among the first major blockchain firms to adopt MCP, a move that positions the protocol as the backbone connecting AI models with on-chain data and applications.

What MCP is

MCP is an open standard developed by Anthropic that lets AI models securely access external tools, data sources, and APIs. Rather than forcing developers to build custom integrations for each AI model, MCP provides a single, universal interface. It's designed to be model-agnostic and works with any provider that supports the protocol.

Alchemy's integration

Alchemy, which provides developer infrastructure for blockchain networks, has integrated MCP into its platform. The integration allows AI agents to query blockchain data — balances, transaction histories, smart contract states — through the same protocol that Anthropic's Claude and other models use. Developers can now build crypto-aware AI applications without stitching together separate APIs.

Coinbase's move

Coinbase followed suit, integrating MCP across its developer tools and exchange services. The exchange's move means that AI models can interact with Coinbase's APIs — for trading, wallet management, and market data — using the standardized MCP interface. For Coinbase, it's a bet that MCP will become the dominant way AI talks to crypto infrastructure.

The integration is significant because it moves MCP from a theoretical standard to a practical one. With two of the largest crypto infrastructure providers on board, developers no longer have to choose between competing protocols. The combined reach of Alchemy and Coinbase means that any AI model using MCP can access a wide swath of the crypto ecosystem out of the box. That's the kind of network effect that turns a protocol into a de facto standard.

Neither Alchemy nor Coinbase has disclosed specific usage metrics, but the integrations are already live. Other infrastructure firms are expected to follow, as the cost of supporting MCP drops once it's already built into the major platforms. The standard is still in its early stages, but the pieces are falling into place for MCP to become the default way AI models connect to crypto — and beyond.
