Avalanche's native token AVAX is trading at $6.43, below every meaningful short-term moving average. Momentum has gone flat. But open interest just spiked 22.8% in 24 hours, signaling traders are piling into positions ahead of what could be a sharp move.
Flat momentum, rising bets
When price stalls and open interest jumps, it usually means money is waiting for a trigger. The 22.8% OI increase is the largest one-day jump in weeks. It suggests that both longs and shorts are adding exposure, not closing out. That kind of buildup often precedes a breakout — or a breakdown.
AVAX has been sliding since mid-December. It's now below its 10-day, 20-day, 50-day, and 200-day moving averages. That's a bearish alignment. But the OI spike means the next directional move could be violent, regardless of which way it goes.
The $6.16 line in the sand
The critical support level is $6.16. That's the zone where buyers stepped in during late November. If AVAX holds above it, the flat momentum could turn into a bounce. If it breaks, there's not much standing in the way until $5.50.
Traders are watching that level closely. A drop below $6.16 would likely trigger stop-losses and liquidations, accelerating the move lower. On the flip side, a reclaim of the $6.50 area could flip sentiment quickly.
No one's calling a bottom yet. The OI spike just means the market is coiled. The question now is which way the spring unwinds.
