Binance began shifting non-stock crypto assets out of its Funding Accounts and into Spot Accounts on September 29, the first stage of an internal overhaul that will run through January 2027. The company says the move changes nothing about the total value of user holdings. Funding Accounts are eventually getting a new name — Stocks Accounts — and a narrower job: settling trades in stocks and stock options.
What's actually moving
Bitcoin, Ether and other ordinary crypto sitting in Funding Accounts are headed to Spot Accounts. So are balances that arrived through Binance Card and gift-card activity. The migration is being rolled out in stages rather than as a single overnight switch, which gives the exchange room to catch problems before they spread.
Binance has been explicit that this isn't a forced sale or liquidation. It's account plumbing. Historical transaction labels stay where they are, so users checking old records won't find their history rewritten.
The stocks business is the reason
Binance has been building out tokenized stock and stock-option products, and that business needs cleaner settlement and accounting than a general-purpose funding bucket can provide. Separating stock settlement from everyday crypto balances is the point of the exercise. When the rename happens in January 2027, the Stocks Accounts will support USD, USDC, USDT, USD1, U and BNB as settlement assets.
The plan was announced last week. September 29 is when the operational side kicked in.
What users need to check
Most people won't have to do anything. That said, some recurring payment and Convert settings that specifically point at Funding Accounts may need manual updates. Binance Pay and the Convert function are being reworked to work with the new structure, and anything that silently depended on Funding Account balances is worth a look before the later migration stages land.
The practical advice is boring: check your recurring orders, check your Convert defaults, and don't assume a setting still points where it used to.
An 18-month runway
The staged timeline is unusually long for an exchange migration — most firms try to finish account changes in weeks. Stretching it to January 2027 suggests Binance wants to keep the stock products and the existing crypto business running in parallel without forcing users to relearn the app twice.
The next concrete milestone is the Funding Account rename itself in January 2027, when the settlement-asset list for Stocks Accounts takes effect. Until then, the migration continues in stages, and users with custom payment or Convert setups are the ones most likely to notice.
