MUSD, a stablecoin fully backed by Bitcoin, has surpassed $750 million in cumulative trading volume as of August 4, 2026. The project is simultaneously expanding across the Wormhole network, a cross-chain messaging protocol that connects over 30 blockchains. The milestone and expansion together show that Bitcoin-backed stablecoins are gaining traction in decentralized finance.
How MUSD works
MUSD is minted by depositing Bitcoin as collateral. Users lock BTC into a smart contract and receive MUSD in return, giving them a stable asset while keeping exposure to Bitcoin's price. Unlike fiat-backed stablecoins that rely on a central issuer, MUSD is backed entirely by Bitcoin reserves. The stablecoin can be redeemed for the underlying BTC at any time, subject to the protocol's rules.
Expanding on Wormhole
MUSD is now live on the Wormhole network, which lets assets move between blockchains like Solana, Ethereum, and Avalanche. The integration means MUSD can be transferred and used across multiple chains without needing separate bridges. This expands the stablecoin's reach beyond its native chain, letting it tap into DeFi ecosystems on different networks. The move is part of a broader trend of stablecoins seeking multi-chain presence to capture more liquidity.
A milestone for Bitcoin-backed stablecoins
Crossing $750 million in lifetime volume puts MUSD in a small club. The vast majority of stablecoin volume comes from fiat-backed coins like USDC and USDT. MUSD's growth indicates that Bitcoin holders are increasingly willing to lock up their BTC to access a stable asset for DeFi. It also shows that the infrastructure for Bitcoin-backed stablecoins is maturing, with Wormhole providing the cross-chain connectivity needed for broad adoption.
Composability across chains
With Wormhole, MUSD becomes a cross-chain asset that can be plugged into lending markets on Solana, liquidity pools on Ethereum, or derivatives platforms on Avalanche. This composability is key for DeFi: a stablecoin that works on multiple chains can serve as a base layer for more complex financial products. MUSD's volume shows that users are already taking advantage of this, using the stablecoin to move value between ecosystems without friction.
The Wormhole integration is live, and MUSD is now accessible on multiple chains. The next test for the project is whether it can sustain this growth as more Bitcoin-backed stablecoins enter the market. For now, MUSD has a head start.
