Bitcoin Nears 57% of Blocks Mined for 2028 Halving

Bitcoin has now mined 57% of the blocks needed before the next halving, expected in 2028. That leaves about 90,170 blocks until the block reward drops from 3.125 BTC to 1.5625 BTC. The milestone comes roughly two years after the last halving in April 2024.

How the countdown works

Bitcoin halves every 210,000 blocks. The current epoch started at block 840,000. The next halving will trigger at block 1,050,000. As of today, the network has processed about 959,830 blocks — 57% of the way there. At the standard 10-minute block interval, that's roughly 1.7 years of mining left.

What the next halving means

The reward cut will reduce new Bitcoin issuance from about 450 BTC per day to 225 BTC per day. That's a supply shock baked into the code. Miners will earn less per block, which historically has squeezed less efficient operations. The 2024 halving already pushed some miners to upgrade hardware or consolidate.

No surprises in the schedule

Bitcoin's halving schedule is deterministic. The 57% figure is just a snapshot — the network has never missed a halving date. The real question is how hash rate and price respond as the reward shrinks. For now, the countdown ticks on.
