Bitfinex has secured a Digital Asset Service Provider (DASP) license in El Salvador, the company announced. The license lets the cryptocurrency exchange add its core spot trading business to the regulated operations it already runs in the country.
What the license unlocks
El Salvador’s DASP framework covers a range of digital asset services. For Bitfinex, the new authorization means it can offer spot trading to customers under local oversight. The exchange already had some regulated presence in the country, but the DASP license broadens what it can do there.
Bitfinex’s Latin America push
The move deepens Bitfinex’s footprint in Latin America. El Salvador became the first country to adopt Bitcoin as legal tender in 2021, and since then several crypto firms have sought licenses there. Bitfinex now joins a growing list of exchanges operating under the country’s regulatory framework.
It’s not clear how many customers Bitfinex expects to serve through the new license or what specific trading pairs it will offer first. The company didn’t provide a timeline for launching spot trading in El Salvador.
