The purchase
BitMine, an Ethereum treasury company chaired by Fundstrat's Tom Lee, announced the buy in a holdings update posted Monday. The company didn't specify the exact price paid per token, but the $73 million figure implies an average cost around $1,730 per ETH. That's below the current market price, suggesting the firm timed the purchases well.
Tom Lee's role
Lee, a well-known crypto bull and co-founder of Fundstrat Global Advisors, has been at the helm of BitMine since its pivot to an Ethereum treasury strategy earlier this year. His involvement gives the company a high-profile advocate, though it also puts a spotlight on its concentrated bet. BitMine now holds more ETH than many publicly traded companies hold in cash.
What the stash means
With 5.7 million ETH, BitMine controls a meaningful chunk of Ethereum's supply. For context, that's more than the combined holdings of the Ethereum Foundation and many large DeFi protocols. The company's strategy appears to be straightforward: accumulate and hold. It doesn't stake its ETH or lend it out, at least based on public disclosures.
The timing isn't trivial. Ethereum has been trading in a range this summer, and a $73 million buy-in from a single entity can move markets. BitMine's purchases likely contributed to some of the upward pressure seen last week.
