Bitmine Immersion Technologies, a Norwalk, Connecticut-based firm trading under the ticker BMNR, acquired 7,391 ether tokens last week. The purchase pushes its total holdings to 5.81 million ETH, a position that puts the company close to controlling 5% of the entire ethereum supply. That makes Bitmine the largest corporate ether holder on record.
The size of the position
Five point eight one million ether is a lot by any measure. It's roughly one out of every twenty coins in circulation. For a company that most retail traders had barely heard of a year ago, the accumulation is striking.
The 7,391 tokens bought last week are just the latest addition. Bitmine has been stacking ether steadily, and the pace has picked up in recent months. The company hasn't said whether it plans to keep buying at this rate.
When one entity holds close to 5% of a major cryptocurrency's supply, the market tends to pay attention. Large holders can move prices when they transact, and their decisions often signal something about institutional appetite.
Bitmine's move also raises questions about liquidity. If the firm ever decided to sell a meaningful chunk, the market would feel it. There's no sign that's coming, but the overhang is there.
About Bitmine
Bitmine is not a household name. The company is based in Connecticut and trades on a smaller exchange. Its core business has been immersion cooling technology for bitcoin miners, but the ether accumulation suggests a different strategy taking shape.
The firm has not disclosed its average purchase price or the source of the capital behind the buys. That lack of transparency is worth noting, though it's not unusual for a company of this size.
What's clear is that Bitmine has become a major player in ethereum's ownership structure. Whether that's a bet on the network's future or something else entirely, the company isn't saying.
