BNB Chain Sets Aug 25 Date for Pasteur Hard Fork

BNB Smart Chain has locked in August 25 at 02:30 UTC for the Pasteur hard fork, a network upgrade that brings three new proposals to the blockchain. The fork is scheduled for future activation, meaning node operators still have time to prepare their systems before the switch is flipped.

The upgrade is significant for one of the largest smart contract ecosystems by user activity. Pasteur introduces BEP-682 for bridge verification, BEP-695 for validator governance, and BEP-675 for block processing capacity. Together, they touch three of the most critical parts of how the network operates.

Why the network is upgrading

The three proposals address distinct areas of BNB Chain's infrastructure. BEP-682 focuses on how bridges are verified, a process that ensures cross-chain transactions are legitimate before they're accepted by the network. Bridge security has become a pressing concern across the broader crypto industry as more value moves through these links.

BEP-695 shifts how validators participate in governance. The proposal alters the mechanics around who can weigh in on protocol decisions and how those decisions get made. Validator governance directly affects the chain's long-term direction, so any change there carries weight.

BEP-675 is aimed at block processing capacity. That's the throughput issue, which is a day-to-day concern for developers and users who want transactions to confirm quickly without waiting through congestion.

What node operators have to do

Running a node on BNB Smart Chain means taking action before the fork goes live. Operators must update their software client to version 1.7.7 and remove the EnableBAL setting from their configuration.

Those two steps are mandatory, not optional. Skipping the client update or leaving the old setting in place could leave a node out of sync with the rest of the network once Pasteur activates. For operators of the chain's many validators, that's not a risk worth taking.

The deadline is the same for everyone: the hard fork fires at 02:30 UTC on August 25. That gives node runners a fixed window to prepare, and the countdown is already ticking.

The state of the fork

Pasteur hasn't been activated yet. It's a scheduled event, and until the clock hits the target time, the current network rules still apply. The upgrade will go into effect at the designated block height on the scheduled date, assuming operators across the chain are ready.

BNB Chain has built up one of the largest smart contract ecosystems in the space, with a steady flow of daily users and a busy developer scene. A hard fork of this scope touches the infrastructure underneath that activity, so the change is being watched closely by those building on it.

The real test comes on August 25, when the network moves to the new rules and operators find out whether their preparations were enough. With the activation date set and the client version confirmed, there's no ambiguity about what needs to happen between now and then.
