Coinbase CEO Armstrong: AI Makes Crypto More Important, Not Less

Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong isn't buying the idea that crypto people should drop everything and chase AI. In a statement this week, he argued that the AI megatrend actually makes crypto more important, not less. Armstrong compared crypto to electricity and the internet — base infrastructure that later technologies depend on.

Why Armstrong pushed back

Some in the industry have suggested crypto builders should pivot to AI. Armstrong rejected that advice, calling it zero-sum scarcity thinking. He argued that autonomous software — AI agents — cannot operate inside traditional finance. They can't open bank accounts or wait three days for a wire. Crypto rails, he said, are the only way those agents can transact.

The AI agent thesis

Armstrong predicted that AI agents will become the largest transacting users of crypto rails. It's a bet that's gaining traction elsewhere. Franklin Templeton's head of digital assets, Sandy Kaul, called agentic AI the killer use case driving blockchain adoption. Binance founder CZ also forecasted in January 2026 that AI agents would settle in crypto.

Crypto's rough 2026

The timing of Armstrong's defense isn't accidental. Bitcoin has fallen more than 25% in 2026. US spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded $4.5 billion of outflows in June alone. Meanwhile, the S&P 500 has gained roughly 9% this year, with AI names accounting for almost all of that advance. The contrast is stark, and it's fueling the narrative that crypto is losing relevance.

What others are saying

Armstrong's view isn't just a defensive posture. It aligns with a growing chorus that sees AI and crypto as complementary, not competitive. Franklin Templeton's Kaul explicitly tied agentic AI to blockchain adoption. CZ's January forecast adds weight. The question now is whether the market will start pricing in that future, or if the current downturn will keep the focus on short-term pain.

For now, Armstrong is doubling down. The next concrete test will be whether any major AI agent platforms actually start transacting on crypto rails at scale — something the industry will be watching closely.
