Coinbase Launches AI Agent Payments, Expands Automated Trading Tools

Coinbase is pushing deeper into the intersection of crypto and artificial intelligence. On Thursday, the exchange announced a suite of new tools aimed at businesses and developers, including a payments system for AI agents, expanded automated trading features, and a new SDK called x402.

AI agents get a wallet

The new AI agent payments feature lets autonomous software agents send and receive crypto payments. Coinbase says the system is designed for use cases where AI agents need to pay for APIs, data feeds, or other services without human intervention. The payments are processed on-chain, using USDC on Base, Coinbase's own layer-2 network.

Automated trading gets an upgrade

Coinbase also expanded its automated crypto trading tools. The company didn't provide a detailed changelog, but the update appears to focus on giving users more granular control over trading bots and recurring buys. The tools are available through the exchange's API and its retail platform.

The x402 SDK

For developers, Coinbase released the x402 SDK. The name references the HTTP 402 status code, which was originally reserved for "payment required" but never widely adopted. The SDK lets developers integrate crypto payments into their apps with a few lines of code, using the same infrastructure that powers Coinbase's own checkout flow.

The timing aligns with a broader industry push to make crypto payments more accessible to non-crypto-native businesses. Coinbase is betting that AI agents — which are proliferating across industries — will need a frictionless way to transact. Whether that bet pays off depends on how quickly developers adopt the new SDK and whether the AI agent payment system can handle real-world volume.
