Nasdaq-listed privacy firm Cypherpunk has launched a new mining operation called Cypherpunk Mining, funded by a $33.33 million equity deal with Winklevoss Capital. The company says the fleet is the world's largest for Zcash, and it already controls roughly 18% of the network's total hashrate.
What the $33 million buys
The equity injection from Winklevoss Capital — the investment vehicle run by Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss — gives Cypherpunk the cash to build out its mining infrastructure. The company didn't specify how many machines it's running or where they're located, but the 18% hashrate figure puts it in a dominant position on the Zcash network.
Zcash is a privacy-focused cryptocurrency that uses zero-knowledge proofs to shield transactions. Mining it requires specialized hardware, and controlling a fifth of the network's computing power is a significant stake. For context, that's enough to influence transaction processing and reward distribution, though not enough to attack the chain.
Why mining fits Cypherpunk's treasury plan
Cypherpunk has been building a treasury of digital assets, and mining is a direct way to accumulate coins without buying them on exchanges. The company said the initiative is meant to accelerate those treasury ambitions. In plain terms: they're using the Winklevoss money to generate Zcash at a discount to market prices, assuming their electricity and hardware costs stay low.
This isn't Cypherpunk's first move into crypto infrastructure. The firm has been positioning itself as a privacy-first player in the space, and mining gives it a steady supply of the very asset it's betting on.
The Zcash network's new reality
Adding 18% of the hashrate in one shot is a big deal for a network like Zcash, which is far smaller than Bitcoin or Ethereum. It means Cypherpunk now has a loud voice in how the network operates, including decisions about upgrades and consensus changes. It also concentrates mining power in the hands of a single public company, which some in the privacy community may not love.
The company didn't say whether it plans to expand further or if this is the ceiling. But with $33 million in fresh capital, it has room to grow.
The next question is whether Cypherpunk will push for more hashrate or pivot to other privacy coins. The company hasn't announced a timeline for either. For now, the Zcash network has a new heavyweight, and it's backed by the Winklevoss twins.
