Franklin Templeton, the parent company of crypto exchange Kraken, is developing onchain investment products. The initiative covers tokenized yield products, blockchain-based funds, and a broader push into institutional crypto markets. It's the latest sign that traditional finance isn't just dipping a toe into digital assets — it's building infrastructure.
Inside the onchain product suite
The development focuses on three buckets: tokenized yield products that let investors earn returns directly on a blockchain, funds structured as smart contracts rather than traditional legal wrappers, and tools aimed at institutional players like pension funds and endowments. Franklin Templeton hasn't disclosed specific launch dates or tickers, but the scope suggests a serious build-out rather than an experimental pilot.
Why institutional markets are the target
Institutional demand for regulated onchain products has grown steadily this year. By positioning through Kraken's existing exchange infrastructure, Franklin Templeton can tap a distribution network that already serves accredited investors and institutions. The move also lets the firm bypass some of the friction that slows down traditional fund issuance — think T+2 settlement and manual reconciliation.
The timing isn't accidental. Regulators in several jurisdictions have clarified rules for tokenized funds in recent quarters, giving asset managers a clearer runway. Franklin Templeton is one of the bigger traditional firms to go all-in on this model, and its status as Kraken's parent gives it a built-in edge on the execution side.
What this means for Kraken
Kraken has been expanding beyond spot trading into custody, staking, and now product development through its parent. The exchange itself doesn't appear to be directly building these products, but the parent company's pipeline could eventually feed onto Kraken's platform. That would give Kraken a differentiated offering vs. rivals that rely entirely on third-party fund issuers.
Franklin Templeton declined to comment on timelines or specific product names. The development is ongoing, with no launch date announced yet.
