Freedom Factory Unveils PQ1, First Quantum-Proof Hardware Wallet, With Backing From Balaji and Buterin

Freedom Factory today launched PQ1, calling it the first hardware wallet built to withstand quantum computing attacks. The device, backed by Balaji Srinivasan and Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin, marks a push to future-proof crypto storage against a threat that's still theoretical but increasingly discussed.

The quantum threat

Today's hardware wallets rely on elliptic curve cryptography. A sufficiently powerful quantum computer could crack that math, exposing private keys. The risk isn't immediate — but the 'harvest now, decrypt later' strategy means attackers can scoop up encrypted data today and break it later. PQ1 uses lattice-based cryptography, one of the leading approaches believed to resist quantum attacks. Freedom Factory says it's the first commercial wallet to implement NIST-standardized post-quantum algorithms.

Who's behind it

Balaji Srinivasan, the former Coinbase CTO and investor, and Vitalik Buterin, Ethereum's creator, are both backing PQ1. Their involvement lends the project credibility in a space where quantum-resistant claims are easy to make but hard to verify. Neither has issued a public statement beyond confirming their support, but their names alone signal that this isn't a fringe experiment.

What the wallet does

PQ1 supports Bitcoin, Ethereum, and several other major blockchains. It uses a custom secure element and runs open-source firmware, allowing independent security review. The company hasn't released full specs or pricing yet, but pre-orders open today with shipments planned for Q4 2026. A security audit is expected before the first units ship.

First-mover advantage?

No other major hardware wallet maker — Ledger, Trezor, or others — has released a quantum-resistant product. Several are known to be researching the area, but Freedom Factory is first to market. That could be a real edge, or it could mean the product arrives before the market is ready. Quantum computing timelines are uncertain, and many users may not feel urgency to upgrade today. Still, the backing from two of crypto's most recognizable figures ensures PQ1 won't be ignored.

Pre-orders are live now. The real test will come when the first audit is published and users decide whether quantum-proofing is worth the premium.
