IOG Launches Pogun, Bringing Bitcoin DeFi via Mirroring Technology

Input Output Global (IOG), the development firm behind Cardano, has launched Pogun — a platform that uses mirroring technology to let Bitcoin holders access decentralized finance (DeFi) while keeping their BTC in self-custody. The move opens up lending, trading, and yield opportunities for Bitcoin users without the need to wrap or hand over their coins to a third party.

How the mirroring works

Pogun doesn't move Bitcoin off its native chain. Instead, it creates a mirrored representation on Cardano that tracks the value and allows smart contract interaction. Users maintain full control of their original BTC — the platform never takes possession. That's a key distinction from wrapped tokens like WBTC, where custody shifts to a centralized custodian.

Why self-custody matters here

Bitcoin holders have long been wary of DeFi because most solutions require trust in a bridge or a custodian. By keeping the Bitcoin untouched and only mirroring its value, Pogun tries to remove that friction. Whether the mirroring mechanism itself is trustless will depend on the audit results and how the system handles price feeds and liquidation. IOG hasn't released the full technical specs yet, but the launch signals a push to bring Bitcoin liquidity into Cardano's ecosystem without compromising on security.

The timing isn't accidental. Cardano's DeFi ecosystem has been slowly expanding, and adding Bitcoin exposure could draw in a crowd that's been sitting on the sidelines. But the real test will be whether users trust the mirroring model enough to actually use it.

Pogun is live as of this week. IOG has not announced any specific partnerships or integrations yet, but the platform is expected to support major Cardano DEXs and lending protocols. Users can already connect a Bitcoin wallet and start mirroring. The next update will likely focus on adding more DeFi primitives and publishing the full smart contract code for public review.
